The collective power of community is a common sentiment at Near East Foundation (NEF). We see it in the communities we serve who work together to improve their livelihoods, and we see it in our community of supporters who come together to influence positive change. 

Last year, three Moroccan scholars in the U.S. inspired their community to come together in response to the devastating earthquake that struck Morocco. Through a GoFundMe campaign, Brahim El Guabli, Aomar Boum, and Mounia Mnouer mobilized over 1,000 people and raised $110,000+ for Near East Foundation to use toward its relief efforts in Morocco.  

 NEF’s initial emergency response helped alleviate the immediate need for food, shelter, clean water, and essential non-food items for those most severely impacted by the earthquake. September 8, 2024, marks one year since the earthquake, and much remains to be done to help the people affected by this disaster. 

The donated funds expanded NEF’s response and are aiding earthquake survivors in the province of Ouarzazate, an area already facing difficult circumstances of poverty and marginalization.  

These generous contributions are helping 40 families rebuild their homes, providing them with a safe and secure place to live once again. Additionally, 25 families are receiving cash assistance to help them cover their basic needs or restore their livelihoods, giving them the tools and resources needed to regain their financial footing. 

This remarkable community-driven fundraising effort, combined with generous support from Islamic Relief USA, is aiding nearly 6,000 Moroccans. 

As we reflect on the year since the earthquake, we celebrate the resilience of the Moroccan people and the global community that rallied around them. Brahim, Aomar and Mounia’s leadership and the generosity of all who contributed will leave an indelible mark on the lives of many, helping to rebuild communities and restore hope in the aftermath of disaster.
