In April 2023, a power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted into violent conflict in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum. The conflict quickly spread to other regions in the country, becoming a war that has devastated the country for 21 months. The ongoing war has led to more than one hundred thousand deaths, the displacement of over 12 million people, food insecurity for more than 26 million people (half of Sudan’s population), and famine for an estimated one million people.    

Near East Foundation (NEF) has worked in Sudan since 1978, building local capacity in agricultural production and working with a vast network of civil society partners to support communities affected by conflict and climate-related crises. Since the onset of the war in 2023, NEF’s emergency relief efforts, recovery initiatives, and resilience programming have provided essential services.

• Supporting our network of local partners, who are ready to mobilize, rapidly deliver a tailored response, and quickly adapt to complex, highly dynamic crises. 

• Reaching the most vulnerable, especially those facing multiple vulnerabilities, such as displaced people with disabilities and marginalized populations living in remote areas. 

• Ensuring people can meet their basic needs effectively and sustainably by providing individualized support at scale. 

• Utilizing and leveraging market-based approaches that foster self-reliance, dignity and safe livelihoods rather than short-term charity.
